Our Carpentry classes will primarily focus on energy efficient framing techniques that use more traditional materials in a more efficient way which ensures more insulation and less wood to create a tighter building envelope. This type of construction is often referred to as advanced framing or OVE (Optimum Value Engineering). Classes will also be introduced to other building systems such as SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels), ICF’s (Insulated Concrete Forms), aerated block systems, and several engineered wood options.
Classes will cover several insulation systems as well as natural building options such as cob and straw bale construction. Classes will look at different insulations systems such as open and closed cell foam insulations, denim insulation products, cellulose products and more. Building science issues such as vented vs. non-vented crawlspace and attics, IAQ (Indoor Air Quality), and passive solar design will also be discussed.
The types of live projects change every semester and will determine the focus of hands-on aspects of the course. Projects in the past have included the following: our green modular home, community pavilions, building a cob structure at Vance Elementary, several roof framing projects, living roof project, student renovation projects, sheds, home inspection project, green dog house, shop renovations, solar box ovens, help with Habitat for Humanity homes, campus gazebo, classroom construction at Colbond, children playhouses, and more. <View our Projects in Sustainability.>
AB Tech Construction Science has a long history of community involvement and consistently networks for collaboration on new and interesting projects. Currently, we have some great projects in the works that include a combination of several green building concepts and techniques. We are also working on getting LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certification incorporated into our program. Come join our crew and discover the future of construction.
