The program teaches many skills both helpful and crucial to running a construction business, but we don't claim to teach everything you need to know to run your own business. The purpose of our Carpentry and Cabinetmaking programs are to prepare students to construct residential structures with the proper use of tools and by introducing them to current and future construction methods. Concepts such as Optimum Value Engineering, Energy Star, Thermal Insulation Systems, Passive Solar and their effects are applied throughout the curriculum.
After completion, several of our students have taken and passed the State of North Carolina’s Builders Licensing Examination or have successfully gone into their own private practice. We do not specifically teach our courses targeted at the Builder’s examination. Our primary concentration is to create a foundation for the student to understand and apply the sciences learned in the classroom and through various demonstrations.
Our Construction Management Technology program is more advanced and builds on the student’s technical skills and then adds business management courses based on the benefits of organized construction practices. It is still not intended to be the ultimate course to run a business. What it does is give the student a better opportunity for understanding how a construction business could fail or succeed. Courses in this curriculum are intended for students with accumulated field experience who already have a basic concept of an operating construction practice through being a tradesperson and are looking for advancement. All of the skills learned are directly applicable to be placed into business practice immediately.
Education in construction is an ongoing effort. We associate ourselves with lifelong learning. The industry is continuing to make huge advancements and we will need to continue to learn new applications. Often, our students choose to advance their education. AB Tech provides the foundation.
“At AB Tech, I was hoping to launch ahead after years of on-the-job training, and that is exactly what happened. AB Tech provided a mix of fieldwork and construction theory that made understandable what otherwise could have been overwhelming. By the time I finished the carpentry program, I felt confident that I could make my intended career transition. My current success as a builder shows that I, in fact, gained the skills and knowledge needed to run a competitive carpentry business." -Sam Pedisich
